与其他角色不同，丁仪的第一次出场并不在《三体》，而在刘慈欣的另一部科幻小说《球状闪电》，作为刘慈欣小说常驻角色，丁仪显得非常立体全能。

因为智子对地球科技的封锁，杨冬等一些科学家因世界观的崩塌承受不住打击自杀了，丁仪是杨冬的男友，理论物理学家，因对球状闪电的研究中发现宏原子而闻名于世。丁仪受邀参加作战会议，而与汪淼等人相识。

三体集会被围剿之后，人类从叶文洁口中得知了智子的存在，丁仪推测出了对基本粒子维度的控制让三体人有了制造智子的能力，从而使人类科技被锁死。丁仪后来也参与了“古筝计划”，获得了“审判日”号截留的信息，在作战中心，丁仪、汪淼、常委思所有人的眼睛同时看到了五个字：“你们是虫子！”

在“螳螂”号上，丁仪带领各舰队的几名人员一同接触了水滴，被水滴深深的震撼。丁仪发现水滴的表面绝对光滑，毫无摩擦，且温度保持在绝对零度。水滴尾部的尖端，一个蓝色的光环出现了，丁仪在这个光环中瞬间被高温汽化，结束了自己奇幻的一生。而这个如珍珠一般圆润的死神，转瞬间便消灭了人类最高级的空间武装力量。
